11 Pieces of Advice from Successful Authors

There is no one, universal trick or key to becoming a successful author—there are many complex ins and outs to the craft of writing and to developing talent. With that in mind, it’s always wise to garner as much advice from successful writers as you can. Following are eleven pieces of writing wisdom from some beloved authors. Perhaps one—or some—of them will resonate.

“Never use a long word where a short one will do.”

– George Orwell

“Protect the time and space in which you write. Keep everybody away from it, even the people who are most important to you.”

– Zadie Smith

“Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the four hundred pages and write just one page for each day; it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.”

– John Steinbeck

“Let grammar, punctuation, and spelling into your life! Even the most energetic and wonderful mess has to be turned into sentences.”

– Terry Pratchett

“If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.”

– Virginia Woolf

“Kill your darlings, kill your darlings; even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.”

– Stephen King

“The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”

– Sylvia Plath

“Remember: When people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.”

– Neil Gaiman

“Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you’re doomed.”

– Ray Bradbury

“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”

– Robert Frost

“I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide.”

– Harper Lee
